The IATA Travel Pass App to be trialed on a Virgin Atlantic flight to Barbados
Global airline industry body IATA said on Wednesday (31 March 2021) a digital travel pass for COVID-19 test results and vaccine certificates would be launched on the Apple platform in mid-April.
UK-based carrier Virgin Atlantic said on Friday it would trial the IATA app on its London to Barbados route from April 16. Barbados has said it will accept the pass at its border, one of the first countries to accept a digital pass instead of paper documentation.
IATA Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East Kamil Alawadhi said it was expected to launch on the Apple platform around April, and later for the Android platform.
About IATA Travel Pass
IATA Travel Pass is a mobile app that helps travellers to store and manage their verified certifications for COVID-19 tests or vaccines. It is more secure and efficient than current paper processes used to manage health requirements . This is important given the potentially enormous scale of testing or vaccine verifications that will need to be securely managed.
IATA’s Travel Pass App, allows passengers to create a secure and verified digital identity linked to their passport, verify their test/vaccination requirements and status, and share this information with the relevant authorities.
IATA Travel Pass is built on verifiable credential technology, a new standard for digital identity that puts the individual in control of their data. Verifiable credentials allow individuals to hold identity documents (including COVID-19 test results), as digital ‘credentials’ in a secure smartphone ‘digital wallet’ app, and control when and with whom these credentials are shared.
Unlike traditional identity models, the verifiable credential model is completely decentralized, meaning there is no data intermediaries and sensitive data is not stored on a centralized database. Your data is always safe, private, secure, and under your control.
